September 2006 Newsletter

September 2006

Hi Everyone,

It's hard to believe that another summer is coming to an end!  So much to do before the snow comes.  Hope you enjoy this month's newsletter and that it finds you well and happy!

Training Tips for Dogs -  Barking dogs!  Dogs bark for a reason not just for the sake of barking.  They are in need of something.  Trying to figure out exactly what they need or want is sometimes a tricky endeavor.  We humans like to have them bark to let us know someone is there or approaching, but we don't like it much otherwise.  Choose a command such as "quiet", "enough", or "no bark."  Stick with the one you choose so there is consistency.  When the dog is barking inappropriately ask the dog to sit.  This alone will sometimes take care of it because you have changed their mindset.  If they continue to bark give the "quiet" command and wait a few moments, if they stop, give them praise.  Remember consistency is the important part of changing a dog's behavior.
For Our Feline Friends -   If your cat is having trouble with kidneys, urinary track infections, crystals/stones, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome it may be because of what they are eating or not eating.  Check out the following link as it contains some good information for thought.  http://www.catinfo.org/index.htm

Life on the Wildside!    -    For those who don't know what I am talking about let me explain.  I do wildlife rehabilitation as a sub-permittee  through Utah Wildlife Rehabilitation - A Non-Profit Organization.  We work in association with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resource.  All of the work I do with the wildlife is charity.  It is my way of giving something back to the community and the universe.
We have some great updates to tell you about.  Remember the little tree squirrel recuperating that was injured by a cat.  She had (and the key word is had) a paralyzed leg, hurt eye, and gimpy front leg.  She recovered nicely and I was just giving her a couple of more days for the front leg to get stronger before releasing her.  I noticed she had a built a larger than usual nesting bed.  Later that day, on August 18th to be exact, she gave birth to one little baby.  Both baby and mother are doing nicely I am glad to report.  I will probably need to keep them through the winter due to the lateness of the birth. The baby is very chubby! She is such a good little mother.  I will keep you posted.  Pictures to come next month.....she is very protective and camera shy!
I received another ground squirrel that had been hit by a car.  Took care of him for a week and released him yesterday!  Not without incident though!  I had him contained in a plastic cat crate which is fine until they start feeling better.  They chew like crazy which I was well aware of.  He had started to gnaw around the air openings a little the night before so my plan was to release him the next morning after my first pet visit.  However, when I got home he had chewed a hole big enough to climb out so he had a big adventure running around and hiding out in my office chattering the entire time.  I finally recaptured him by putting the crate down and sort of herding him into it.......then I put him into another metal crate and took him out to release him.  I have never seen a squirrel run so fast!
I have released 4 or 5 mourning doves in the last few weeks.  They hang around my yard for quite some time due the plentiful food left out for all the birds.  One was released after being in care since April!
The baby ducks were released August 31st.       They will have the advantage of living on a private pond that is made from fresh water supplied by a stream/creek up Millcreek Canyon thanks to Margo Provost.  This is a big relief for me since I worry about whatever I release after spending so much time caring for them.  Again, Margo my deepest thanks and appreciation.  They should do well there.  They are fat and happy and love being able to swim endlessly.
I just received a very tiny baby duck that is going it alone.  It will be a tough go, but so far so good.
Oh and yes, I have two more baby pigeons that will be added to the home flock once they take flight!
Thanks for reading! Enjoy the remainder of the summer!
